WinStar Gets Another Classic Win

Belmont Stakes 142

June 5, 2010

Belmont Park - Elmont, NY

The 142nd Running of The Belmont Stakes was void of any theatrics or drama entering Saturdays post time.  The Derby winner Super Saver and the Preakness Stakes winner Lookin At Lucky skipped the third leg of this years triple crown for some well deserved rest with no sweep on the line.  Twelve horses entered the starting gate for the mile and a half marathon with Nick Zito trainee Ice Box as the post time favorite.  First Dude would nurse moderate fractions for the opening mile and a quarter and was run down late by eventual winner 13/1 shot Drosselmeyer, owned by WinStar Farm LLC.  The win would give WinStar and their racing operation two-thirds of  this years triple crown races as their other three-year-old Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby.  The Belmont victory was a triple crown race first for trainer Bill Mott.  Drosselmeyer was the better Derby prospect for WinStar but was late developing and missed the derby because of graded earnings and had to watch from the sidelines as his stablemate earned the roses.

The Dwyer Stakes, which used to be called The Peter Pan Stakes, was once again a major prep for the Belmont as the top three finishers of that race finished in the top three again in the Belmont but in reverse order.  With all participants carrying 126 pounds one of the more interesting moments came nearing the seven-eighths marker when the eight-pound lead pad carried under jockey Rajiv Maragh’s saddle aboard Uptowncharlybrown came loose and fell to the track.  The colt would finish the race at 118 pounds and was subsequently disqualified by the stewards from a good finishing fifth and placed last.

The steamy humid Saturday afternoon had forecasts for thunderstorms which stayed away for the crowd of just over 45,000 fans in attendance. Droseelmeyer's final time of 2:31.57 was the slowest Belmont Stakes recorded in the last fifteen years.  Jockey Mike Smith replaced Kent Desormeaux aboard the winner after consultation of the WinStar brass who looked to change it up and hoped for a better result which with they were rewarded.  9/5 favorite Ice Box  finished ninth after finishing second in the Derby.  Trainer Nick Zito also trained second place runner Fly Down which gave Zito his seventh second place finish in the Belmont.

ESPN and ABC did their usual performance covering an otherwise lackluster event.  It is hard to garner much excitement for supposedly as big of a billing as the Belmont when the triple crown is not on the line.  The size of the crowd showed that fact.  Regardless of new camera angles and behind the scenes stories the race gets lost in translation to the general public when a major milestone is not involved.  The story about Uptowncharlybrown and Alan Seewald was compelling and would have made a great story had he won.  In actuality it would have been  doubly heartbreaking had he won because he was disqualified for the weight issue.  We now move to the three-year-olds second season and the Haskell is right around the corner.  With the elite summer meet at Monmouth don’t be surprised to see many of them racing at the shore oval this summer.  Until then cash as many tickets as you can.

142nd Belmont Stakes Race Recap:

Stay Put broke in the air as the field was sent on their way.  First Dude went to the front and nursed his way through the opening mile and a quarter in fractions of 24.15, 49.19, 1:14.94, 1:40.25 and 2:04.97.  Interactif tracked the leader the entire way in second and Game On Dude was right there in third.  Uptowncharlybrown lost his weight pad at the 7/8 marker.  In the lane First Dude was still up by a length as Drosselmeyer drew alongside the leader with an eighth of a mile to go and then went by to gain the lead and draw clear by three-quarters of a length to win the 2010 Belmont Stakes in a final time of 2:31.57.  Fly Down would close well to get up by a neck for second while First Dude, after setting the early pace, settled for third.  Drosselmeyer is a three-year-old chestnut colt owned by WinStar Farm LLC, trained by William Mott and was ridden by Mike Smith.
