For Fillies, Two Year Olds

One Mile- Turf

Saturday, August 26, 2000        Race 7

Turf Course: Fast

Finish Wire:

The field was off in good order except for Steiners Baby Girl who was off a bit slow.  Tickle Me Too led Word Puzzle, Medicine Bow and You Be Mine into the first turn.  A group of horses at the back of the pack, running in close quarters with no where to go, wound up very wide in the first turn including first time starter Steiners Baby Girl, who made a strong move to get back with the pack after the bad break.  Word Puzzle led the field down the backside through a half-mile in 47:0 pressed by Missed Dues.  In the turn Missed Dues put a head in front and carried the small lead into the stretch.  Across the turf shute Ruff and Croom were driving towards the leader as Ruff went on to win The Junior Champion Stakes by two lengths at the wire over Croom and Steiners Baby Girl, who after an eventful outing, managed to get up for third.  Ruff is a two year old filly owned by Robert Spiegel, trained by David Donk and was ridden by Chuck C. Saturday, August 26, 2000        Race 9

Turf Course: Fast

Finish Wire:

The field was sent off to a good start as Conscience Clear left the turf shute with a head length lead over Illegal Smile as the two scrimmaged for the lead passing the grandstand for the first time.  Western Squire was running in third position.  Conscience Clear led the field into the first turn followed closely by Illegal Smile as the rest of the pack tried to stay within striking distance.  Down the backside Conscience Clear ran three quarters in 1:12:3 still leading the field as the pack was now becoming compact entering the far turn.  Jay's Crown was now running in third position as Cogburn had moved into fourth as Western Smile was now backing up to the near back of the pack.  Entering the stretch Conscience Clear still had a length lead but Ivars Big Peaceful was in the middle of his big move running four wide through the turn and was now gaining on the leaders.  In deep stretch, Jay's Crown overtook Conscience Clear and held off the late driving Ivars Big Peaceful by a head to win The Choice Stakes.  Jay's Crown is a three year old owned by Meadowridge Stable, trained by B.
